The car was packed for the long drive home this afternoon, and the time had come to start rounding up my grubby children - tired but happy from a brilliant weekend of non-stop playing with old pals, and a too-short night on a blow-up mattress.
I stood in the garden with my friend, car keys in hand, and we had one last laugh at the expense of our deliciously sensitive and over-dramatic sons:
"You're MEAN Mummy, you just don't understand how I FEEL", I mocked.
"Mummy, this has been the WORST day of my LIFE", she mimicked.
And then we cackled like hags, shoulders shaking as we tried to laugh quietly so the children wouldn't know we were talking about them.
Yes, I managed to dig myself out of Cheshire and plant myself back here in southern soil ... but one thing I've learnt is that friendships like that one don't grow on trees.
You are so right, which is why we treasure them. Sounds like you have a good bolt hole. ;0)
ReplyDeleteWelcome back.
ReplyDeleteLast year I met my best childhood friend whom I last saw when we were 17 years old. (We are now 63). We never drew breath all day - Husband acted the dumb waiter and just plied us with tea and coffee to lubricate our throats! We had a fabulous day!
ReplyDeleteFriends like that are very special and we are very lucky when we find them. I have a friend who I don't see anywhere near often enough but when we are together we fall straight back into what we built at school as if we were never aprt.
ReplyDeletel know the feeling...you are SO right..
ReplyDeletecheck out a likeminded post of
'My cup runneth over' last week...
Glad to see you're back! Yes, I still think I have more friends in the UK than I do in the States, and I've been here since 1990!
ReplyDeleteI still have more friends in the States than I do here in the Low Countries. We are bound together as if by marriage.
ReplyDeleteYou're right about that! I have two friends that I've known since I was a girl. Very special.
ReplyDeleteGlad you're back!

Ah yes, I have a friend exactly like that...I call her Evil Sister...I can always blame her for any little potholes I find myself falling into and bless her, she admits to Mac it was her fault!
ReplyDeleteGreat post...

Welcome back to blogland - you're right about friends. I met up last night with someone from school I haven't seen for 17 years and it was as if nothing had changed...
ReplyDeleteHey GBS you've had a blog makeover! Very smart. Hope you had a good rest and holiday. Blogthatmamax
ReplyDeleteWho are you calling a hag? That's the WORST thing anyone has said about me in my WHOLE LIFE. Friendship is precious and must be nurtured and I can't imagine not having you as a friend. LOL
ReplyDeleteI'm still up here! Funny to think of you heading south again...back to my homeland.
ReplyDeleteOne of the things I've loved most about being up here is the people. I've made some fantastic friends. Everyone is so much more down to earth and up for a laugh than many down south (hideous generalisation OF COURSE!!!)
